Are you interested in trying the best Chicken and Sweet Potato Waffles in Portland? If the answer is yes then be prepared to rise early to beat the line around the block for Screen Door. This small restaurant has been a top contender in the Portland restaurant scene for years with accreditation from Portland Monthly, The Cooking Channel, Glamour, The Washington Post and many more.

We left the house around 6:45 am to ensure our spot in line. It was Alexis’ father’s birthday and breakfast at Screen Door is their tradition. The restaurant opens at 8am and by 7:30am even on a weekday, a line was starting to form behind us.

We were seated in the small outdoor space that has approximately 6-7 tables with only 3 that will accommodate our party of six. The boys quickly got to coloring their menus while we waited for the Praline Bacon, a smoked bacon caramelized w/ toasted pecans, brown sugar & a hint of cayenne. I absolutely love bacon and will order candy bacon at almost every restaurant. The Praline Bacon is sticky and savory. If you even slightly enjoy a bacon treat this is a must.

Alexis’ father, his friend and I all ordered the chicken and sweat potato waffles. The waffles come piled high with a huge piece of juicy fried chicken held securely in place by a large knife. The combination truly is a representation of the hearty Southern Cuisine the restaurant is based upon.

Alexis opted for the Huevos Rancheros which was a combination of mouthwatering flavors such as roja braised beef brisket, pepper-jack cheese, black beans, cilantro crema and ranchero sauce. This was all served with crispy corn tortillas with two over easy eggs layered on top.

The air was warming up as the sun shine burst through the trees onto our table tops. Our bellies were full and we were delighted with another successful trip to the Screen Door. We highly recommend this to anyone looking for a new breakfast spot. Hopefully you can create your own traditions!
